Opened in 2007, this small hotel anchors a rehabbed 17th century block of shops, restaurants and offices between the Bo-Kaap and Long Street's bars and shopping. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the interiors are extraordinary. And the owners redecorate compulsively: every year, the place looks entirely different. No garden, but breakfast (included) is served in the block's open-air central terrace, which reputedly houses the oldest grape vine in South Africa. Warm, dignified personal service. The Caveaux Deli in the complex offers gourmet snacks; alas, it and most of the restos in the complex are closed Sundays, so you have to do some advance planning. Gives the feeling of being cosseted in a sometimes-tough city. Double rooms about US$200/night. In March, a special offer gives three nights at this hotel and two nights at Clifton 3rd for a R500 savings.

Worth the splurgeUtter luxury, Four poster bed, oriental rugs and old prints, huge beaded sheep; they make it all work and it's heavenly. Minibar full of yummy local treats.
