Artist 2.0 - An Online Presentation Workshop 12PM to 6PM
Key to any artists career these days involves having a concise online image and social media presence and so our kick off session at the CTEMF Open End is all about online presentation.
We invite all up-and-coming artists to come and have a professional headshot taken of themselves by the Red Bull Studios Cape Town Photographer. We will also have workstations manned by industry professionals focused on building and maintaining Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud pages.
There is limited space for these sessions, so we ask that anyone interested please RSVP to studio@za.redbull.com answering the following questions:
1. What is your artist / band name and what kind of music are you making?
2. Why do you feel you need to update your online persona?
We will let everyone who has applied know whether they are accepted or not by no later than Friday the 29th of January 2016.
A Discussion With DJ Superfly 6PM to 8PM
DJ Superfly is a legendary name amongst those who tell the story of electronic music in Cape Town. A DJ whose career and story spans nearly 3 decades, and continues to be retold through the sets he plays in today's clubs and festivals.
Venues such as Le Club, Casablanca, La Mode and Gallery pop up in very few artist bios. Having supported acts such as Right Said Fred and Fatboy Slim, this is a story of the history of Cape Town through dance floor culture you won’t want to miss, hosted by friend and fellow CPT legend Rozzano.
Wed 03 February
Button Bashers Breakdown 2PM to 4PM
Button Bashers is one of Cape Town's most interesting events. The premise is simple: Four producers are selected to battle at Uppercut at the Waiting Room. They are given a track to sample the week before the battle, on the night they play their beat to the crowd and a selection of industry judges, and the best beat wins.
Three of the top winners from Button Bashers over the past two years, along with the Button Basher team, will be breaking down their approach to producing sample-based music, with live demonstrations of how their individual approach to production.
A Rough Guide to Gqom with DJ Lag and Rudeboyz 4PM to 5:30PM
Over the past few years Gqom has become one of South Africa's most hotly talked about underground genres. Originating from the townships of Durban, and taking influence from the ever popular sounds of Kwaito and House, the music is characterised by sharp broken beats, chopped up vocal samples and brooding, monotone synths and basslines.
They will be chatting to pioneers of the genre, DJ Lag and the Rudeboyz about where the music comes from, where it currently stands and its future destination.
A Discussion With Chloé 5:30PM to 7PM
Parisian DJ, producer and musician, Chloé has kept herself continuously at the forefront of electronic music, playing in Europe’s most prominent clubs and music venues such as Robert Johnson, Mondo and Fabric, as well as regularly headlining on the festival circuit, and releasing a prolific string of releases over the past two decades on labels such as Karat, Kill The DJ, Throne Of Blood and My Favorite Robot.
She will be giving insight into her illustrious career, her approach to her art and her vision of the global electronic music industry.
A Discussion With Petite Noir 7PM to 8PM
Yannick Ilunga is the 25 year old, genre-defying artist and producer from Cape Town. Half-Congolese, half-Angolan, Ilunga records and performs under the moniker Petite Noir. "La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful" is his debut album released in September 2015 on Domino.
"Down", "Best", "MDR" and “La Vie Est Belle”, the title track off the album, have showcased a unique concoction of influences, seamlessly fusing intricate contemporary electronics with his stirring, soulful vocal and African shuffles that echoes his homeland.
Thurs 04 February (At Guga S'thebe in Langa)
iKasi Experience Unpacked 2PM to 4PM
iKasi Experience is a township based market that celebrates the local culture and entrepreneurial spirit of South Africa’s inhabitants. It provides a platform for trade & economic growth in a safe, entertaining and engaging environment.
Starting in the Western Cape, iKasi Experience has now gone national with events in other regions such as Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal.
We will be chatting to ounders, Loyiso Mdebuka (DJ Loyd) and Vincent Manzini (Sir Vincent) about the history of iKasi Experience, their challenges and their vision for future events, as well on their personal experience of becoming two of Cape Town's hardest working DJs.
A Discussion With Nightmares On Wax 4PM to 6PM
Nightmares on Wax is an institution, albeit a delightfully different one. The man behind the moniker, George Evelyn, just keeps reinventing – not in a wilful way, but flowing along, going at whatever speed he fancies to wherever his ideas carry him. For the last seven years he’s lived in an Ibizan farmhouse and, while he’s Warp Records’ longest serving artist – “the granddaddy,” as he puts it – he overwhelmingly focuses on his current projects, letting them revitalize his music.
This year, Evelyn is celebrating 20 years of Smoker's Delight, the album that helped define the distinct concoction of hip-hop, dub, jazz, funk, soul and electronica that is his sound and that set the tone of countless trip-hop and chillout albums in the late 90s and early 2000s.
A Discussion With Goldie 6PM to 8PM
Ever since Goldie burst on to the graf scene almost 30 years ago, his life has been dedicated to the creation of extraordinary art and music.
Synonomous with popularizing the genres of Jungle and Drum n Bass in the mid 90s, particularly with the release of the game-changing albums Timeless and Saturnz Return, he is also know for being a co-founder of Metalheadz, one of the most prolific and pioneering Drum n Bass labels of all time, as well as being an established and celebrated visual artist with his roots in graffiti and street art.
Please forward all queries to studio@za.redbull.com
CTEMF will unveil the remainder of the headlining acts on the 12th of January 2016 with plenty of surprises in store before then, so keep an eye on our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook feeds over the next couple of months to stay on the beat!
